Name: Leadership Skagit Team Lead Poverty Project
Date: May 9, 2011
Event Description:
Team Lead Poverty Project
In order for our team to bring the following program to Skagit County I am requesting your support.  The team’s community partners are Skagit County Community Action Agency (501C(3) 91-1140086) and Leadership Skagit.    The program will be Friday, May 6, 2011 at Salem Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon.

“Treat a person as he is, and he will remain as he is.  Treat him as he could be, and he will become what he should be,” former football Coach Jimmy Johnson said.

Leadership Skagit Team Lead will bring the battle to Skagit County by inspiring others to act.  In Partnership with Skagit County Community Action Agency and Leadership Skagit, Team Lead will be the first Leadership Skagit Team to present a Challenge Day during their class year.

On May 6, we will engage participants in the process of looking at their preconceived notions of poverty, we will ask them to challenge their beliefs and through a fantastic program led by our special guests we will provide an opportunity to not only see the issues of poverty from a new perspective, and  hopefully participants will chose to help end the cycle of poverty in Skagit County.

Poverty can be a vicious cycle.  Many of the newly poor have a greater chance of breaking free than those whose lives are deeply imbedded from generation to generation.  But, anyone can break that cycle given the right tools.  The greatest of those is the belief that it can be different.  Thus the process of encouraging the Heart is essential to the program.

Have you ever been broke?  Wondered if you should pay the rent or buy groceries?  Did you consider it to be a permanent or temporary condition?  Have you seen movies like “Precious” which demonstrate how a young woman born into the cycle of poverty escaped thanks to others who helped her gain the confidence to believe in her own abilities.  A great teacher, a compassionate minister, a considerate social worker can make a difference and so can you.

A portion of our day on May 6 will include an introduction to the The Circles® Campaign.  The Circles® Campaign was initiated by Move the Mountain to provide transformational leaders a structure to engage the community in ending poverty.   This Program is the single largest expense for the day at please see enclosed flyer for sponsorship opportunities.  See movethemountain.org/circlescampaign.aspx for more information.

A Circle is comprised of a family working to get out of poverty and two to four community allies, people who are willing to befriend the family and support their way out of poverty.  It is anticipated that we will have about 115 people participating throughout the day.  It is anticipated that while some costs are covered and we are thankful to Thomas Foods for providing lunch for everyone, however not all costs are covered please donate generously.

The mission of the Circles® Campaign is to transform communities by building relationships that inspire and equip people to end poverty. The vision of the Circles Campaign is that: Everyone in America has enough meaning, relationships and resources in his or her life to thrive.

Through the presentation of this program, and other presentations thorough out the day,  Team Lead expects to meet the goals of our Challenge Day. We will challenge the process by modeling the way to end poverty, and by enabling others  to act through the introduction of the program.

Thank you for considering our cause we have invited Leadership Skagit Alumni to participate as well.  So if you will donate or would like to join us for the day please respond before April 29.  Please make checks payable to Skagit County Community Action Agency with “CirclesTM” in the memo portion.
Thank you for your kind consideration.

Sincerely, Team Lead Members
Diane Bobko, Richard Delaney, Pola Kelley, Ann Leason, Tyler Steinman, Kelli Tolf, Nancy Jankelson, coach
