Burlington – Four professional aerobatics acts will bring fun, excitement and no shortage of white smoke to the skies over Skagit Regional Airport when Skagit Flight Fest takes place on Saturday, Sept. 7. Festival organizers announced the air show lineup this week.
Admission to Skagit Flight Fest is free to the public, with sponsorships covering the cost of the event. The Port of Skagit, Burlington Chamber of Commerce and Skagit Airport Support Association (SASA) formed a partnership this year to produce the air show, fly-in and community day. Fly-in aircraft will begin arriving early in the morning, and gates will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“We are very pleased to be producing one of the last free-admission air shows in the Pacific Northwest, because we want the citizens of the Skagit Valley to enjoy and appreciate Skagit Regional Airport,” said Kevin Ware, president of the Port of Skagit board of commissioners. “Airports are important public assets, and we are proud of the economic and recreational contributions this airport makes to our community.”
The centerpiece of Skagit Flight Fest will be an aerobatics show starting at 1 p.m. A sky-diving exhibition will kick off the show. Performances will include:
Bud Granley, AT-6 Texan
Bud and Ross Granley, Yak 18 and Yak 55
“Super” Dave Mathieson, MX-2
“The Flying Tenor” Will Allen, Pitts S2B
Vicky Benzing, Extra 300S.
A flyby featuring restored military aircraft and a second flyby of Cascade Warbirds will round out the day’s air show activities. A variety of static displays, youth activities and vendors will add to the appeal of the event.
The Historic Flight Foundation’s historic B-25 Mitchell bomber, “Grumpy,” is scheduled to be on hand for cockpit tours and rides. Built by North American Aviation, the B-25 was a twin-engine medium bomber that flew on virtually every front during World War II. It was the plane used for Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle’s surprise raid on Tokyo in 1942.
