In follow-up to author/humanitarian Lisa Shannon’s visit to Skagit Valley College during
GlobalFest 2012, Skagit Valley College announces the first “Skagit Run for Congo Women” will be held Saturday, June 2 at Skagit Valley Playfields jogging trail. Registration will begin at 8:15 a.m. by the Joan Armstrong Tennis Courts and the run/walk will begin promptly at 9 a.m. and will end by 10 a.m.
After hearing Lisa Shannon speak at SVC, and then reading her book, A Thousand Sisters: My Journey of Hope into the Worst Place on Earth to be a Woman, a diverse team of individuals within the Skagit Valley community began plans to unite to make a difference in the lives of Congolese women and children who are daily facing atrocities in the war-torn African Congo.
Registration is free, however a donation of $10 per participant is requested to Women for Women International to support women in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Online donations can be made at www.active.com/donate/runforcongowoment/skagitvalley . Funds will assist with job skills, training, rights awareness, education, trauma counseling, and small business assistance as these women and children attempt to rebuild their lives. Checks made out to “Women for Women International” and cash will be accepted the day of event.
