Name: Survey of the Interpreting Profession
Date: January 31, 2014
Time: 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM PST
Event Description:
Business owners and key employees who would like to know more about gaining and serving current and potential clients whose first language is not English are invited to attend free-of-charge the Friday afternoon workshop on professional interpreting. This will not cover TRANSLATION (which is written documents only), but interpreting (oral speech). Remember: the business community may stop in at any time to learn about this subject and attend the workshop for no charge, you're free to go when you've learned what you came to hear!  Learn something new about this profession in wide use locally. Between 12:00-1:00 talk to Jaye Stover, President of The Language Exchange, about any questions relating to your business or translations while Lucy talks to those interested in the profession for themselves.

The Workshop is designed for bilingual people who are interested in how to get training and certification in the profession and includes topics such as "what's the difference between summarization and paraphrase", "what's consecutive vs. simultaneous interpreting or sight translation", "why do interpreters interpret "meaning-segment-by-meaning-segment rather than word-by-word?", "how do professional, licensed interpreters "direct traffic" while interpreting, using pacing and positioning?" Where do people interested in interpreting get training?" "How hard are the tests?", etc. There is a materials fee for people who wish to become interpreters, and it may be waived for those of language-of-lesser-diffusion. The class is for speakers of English with any other language combination.
